East Beach Mobile Waste

West Sussex County Council held a public consultation on proposed changes to Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) across West Sussex.

The consultation was open on Monday 16 May for four weeks until Sunday 12 June.

As a result West Sussex County Council have decided to keep the East Beach Household Waste Recycling Service - however this will now be only once a fortnight service.

The following details have been sent to us by WSCC on 1st September:

Further to correspondence in July may I take the opportunity of further detailing the mobile wastes service changes that become effective from 1st October this year at the East Beach car park.

  • The new service will not change in the composition of the containers on site.
  • The service will move to a fortnightly format commencing on October 6th
  • The service will move to a Thursday commencing October 6th
  • The operating hours of the service will be 08.15 - 15.15.

Attached is a document describing the changes in the Chichester mobile service. This will be available at all current mobile sites from tomorrow. The leaflet also includes the calendar of services for both Selsey and the Witterings over the next six months. IIn addition, the site staff will be briefed to inform residents of the changes and WSCC staff will be in attendance for the last two service dates in September.

The decision for changing the service to a Thursday was made based on traffic flows on the Chichester road. There have been problems with truck movements on some of the busier Fridays, causing delays in exchanging the full containers. It is hoped that the change to a Thursday will minimise this. Another consideration has been the bank holidays arrangements; - Normally, the service has not operated on the bank holidays. By moving to a Thursday it will avoid the Good Friday date. We will also review Xmas and New Year openings. However, for 2016/2017 the service will not be affected by the Bank Holidays.

The service at Selsey is for the use of householders only disposing of household waste from their own homes. To prevent possible trade abuse there will be an additional Information Officer to redirect traders to commercial disposal sites during the first month of the new service.

Selsey Town Council  sent their views to West Sussex County Council regarding the potential changes to the mobile waste facility at East Beach, details of this letter can be found on this page.
